Do older adults need different vitamins?

Getting proper nutrition is challenging when you're a senior adult. As you get older, the number of calories your body needs is lower. You must make sure all calories you consume are packed with nutrition to help your body stay healthy. And even then, you can fall short of nutrition because as it ages, the body loses its efficiency to absorb nutrients. Also, your ability to taste food declines and blunts your appetite, so you find it more difficult to chew and digest some dishes.

50% of seniors age 65 need vitamins and other supplements daily to get their dose of nutrients. A healthy diet can improve nutrients intake. But they are short in some particular nutrients, and it's recommended to ask their doctor for recommendations on the supplements they should get to feel better. Here is a list of nutrients and vitamins all seniors need.

Vitamin B12

B12 is essential in the process of creating DNA and blood cells and maintaining a healthy nerve function. But it's challenging for an older body to absorb enough B12 because it processes slower the foods that contain it. Even if seniors eat a diet rich in B12, they still can fall short because their system fails to absorb it

Alongside the foods that include B12 (milk, milk products, eggs, poultry, meat, and fish) seniors should also take supplements that contain it.

Fulvic minerals

Even if they're old, senior bodies understand nature and respond best to natural products. To perform daily activities, they need more energy than a young adult, and fulvic minerals can provide it because they're natural supplements that nourish and cleanse the system. Fulvic acid removes heavy metals from the body and impact the overall mood and wellbeing. They produce enzymes that boost gut health and balance cell life to help seniors live a healthy life.

Calcium

Calcium has many essential roles for the human body, but the most important ones are building and maintaining the bone system. But studies show that as people age, they tend to consume less calcium because they remove the foods that contain it from their diet. Coming short on calcium increases the possibility to experience bone fractures and other injuries.

Therefore, seniors need to consult a physician who evaluates their health state and recommend the supplements they need to take to provide their bodies with the needed amount of calcium.

How can adults stay healthy as they age?

Some changes in diet and lifestyle can make it easier for adults to age with grace. They need to add to their diets foods rich in nutrients without increasing the number of calories they eat. A healthy diet includes seeds, nuts, beans, eggs, poultry, lean meats, seafood, low-fat milk, cheese, rick milk, soy, whole grains, brown rice, whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, vegetables and fruits.

It's best to stay away from empty calories at any age and pick foods that are low in fat and cholesterol. Even if it may get more complicated, adults should also stay physically active because it helps with appetite and flexibility.
