Guiding Principles for Diabetes

By Nancy Lundebjerg posted 11-01-2019 02:12 PM

As National Diabetes Month gets underway, we thought it would be useful to highlight the progress we’ve made on aligning guidelines for the care of older adults with diabetes. We’re so pleased that our own diabetes guideline (first released in 2003) has sparked changes in guidelines from the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Our Guiding Principles for Diabetes infographic provides an overview of where we see alignment across the AGS, NDEP, and ADA guidelines. The infographic tees off a plenary address by Carol Mangione, MD, MSPH, FACP, at the 79th ADA Scientific Session in San Francisco this year. We’re grateful to Carol and to Gerardo Moreno, MD, MSHS, for their review and input into this infographic.

It’s always nice to know progress is happening; sometimes, it’s even nicer to see where, how, and why.

Fantastic! One page summaries are great! I am going to include the link on my geriatric assessment consultations - over treatment of diabetes in frail elders especially in those with dementia is very common. Thank you!
