  • AMERSA Workshop: Substance Use Across the Lifespan

    May 5, 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM (ET)
When older adults with substance use disorders need post-acute care, skilled nursing facilities are often the next step—yet many are turned away due to stigma, regulatory confusion, and barriers to medications for opioid use disorder. AMERSA (Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction) will be holding an interactive workshop to address critical practice gaps in care transitions, interdisciplinary communication, and SNF readiness to support patients with SUDs. Participants will explore practical strategies for strengthening hospital-to-SNF transitions, integrating peer support during and after discharge, and building frontline staff capacity through targeted education. Through case-based discussion and workflow mapping, teams will leave with concrete tools to reduce fragmentation and improve continuity of care.

Emergency department boarding is a system-wide challenge, but for older adults, the consequences can be especially harmful. As hospitals across the country work to improve throughput and capacity, it is critical to understand how boarding uniquely impacts older adults and what emergency teams can do right now to reduce harm. Join leading experts at 3pm EST on May 11 to explore practical, evidence-informed approaches to improving care for older adults experiencing boarding in the emergency department. Webinar Goals: Examine the unique harms of boarding for older adults. Identify practical strategies to mitigate the risks associated with boarding. Review emergency department–level and system-level approaches to addressing boarding.
